Natural gas is one of the most inexpensive energy sources available for your home. Besides being quite inexpensive, natural gas also has a lot of uses, the most common of which is for cooking and heating. Natural gas is relatively safe to use in the home, but it’s still important for home owners to make safe fuel such as natural gas even safer.

Here are some tips for working with natural gas in your home.

Let’s start with the pipes. Natural gas is piped in to residential homes. Some of those pipes in the basement could be pipes for natural gas. Check the pipes regularly for rust and never leave any flammable materials close to the pipes. Avoid hanging anything from those pipes and using them to prop up any object.

Make a habit of having gas pipes, appliances, flues, vents, furnaces and chimneys inspected at least once a year to make sure that everything is in perfect working order.

Never install or move a gas appliance or replace a connector on your own. Always ask for the assistance of a professional gas appliance installer to do this.

Never allow small children to play close to or with natural gas appliances or natural gas pipes, including the cook-top or oven knobs.

Make sure that the areas where natural gas appliances and equipment are placed are kept clean and clear to let the air flow freely.

On no occasion should you use your gas oven for purposes other than cooking -such as for extra room heating

Another very important tip for working with natural gas in your home is to heed the instructions written in the user’s manual of gas appliances and equipment and to perform proper care, use and maintenance.

Don’t use a space heater until it’s properly vented. If your space heater is vent-free, then check if the automatic cut-off switch is working.

The last (but most important) tip for working with natural gas in your home will involve your nose or smelling sense. If ever you smell even a small amount of natural gas odor in the air, leave your home or stay away immediately, call your natural gas provider or dial 911.

Go over these tips for working with natural gas in your home with all members of the family to make sure that you are safe and protected from any natural gas disasters.

After using the kitchen sink to wash dishes and clean pots and pans you may find the kitchen drain dirty and also in need of cleaning – otherwise you might have the unfortunate experience of a clogged drain. Culprits for drain clogs are grease and oil, food scraps, sauces, salad dressings, dairy products and other fatty and oily items.

Keep the kitchen drains clean and prevent them from clogging by following these tips.

Stop the clog before it starts. Don’t pour fatty things such as oil, grease, margarine, butter and more down the garbage disposal or sink. Scrape pots, pans and plates into the trash before washing them and pour excess fats and oils in a separate throw-away container.

One way of keeping kitchen drains clear is to remove any food particles or debris by using a strainer to catch any food particles or running the garbage disposal, if you have one.

Pouring very hot water down the drain will have the effect of melting or dissolving hardened fats and grease and eventually clearing a drain of solidified grease and oil.

Pour boiling water down the drain. Then, drop in a teaspoon of baking soda and pour hot water in after the baking soda. This will not only clear the drain but also help to eliminate bad odor.

Another way to keep drains clear and prevent bad odor is by pouring strong brine or salt water down the drain. Brine or salt water will also prevent grease or fat build up.

Consider using a bio-remediation drain cleaning solution to eliminate backups. Products like Bio-Clean are pipe-friendly bacteria waste eliminators that won’t harm your pipes. Drain cleaning chemicals are corrosive and harmful to the pipes in your home.

When all the above fail, calling a professional plumber is a great option. A plumber can quickly get to the bottom of the problem and get your drain fixed FAST.

If you are installing a new HVAC system for your home or even if you only want to upgrade your existing system, the choice of a HVAC company is as important as the choice of equipment or unit. Spending some time and effort in shopping around for the right heating and air company will pay off in the proper operation and efficiency of your HVAC system.

Here are some tips for choosing a HVAC company:

Don’t rely on phone quotes. Request an in-home estimate.

Ask for a written estimate for the work to be completed.

Get referrals from friends, family and neighbors.

Verify that the HVAC Company you are dealing with is licensed, bonded and insured and that their technicians are also correctly licensed.

Request references and take time to call and make some inquiries as to the quality of the work if you’re not sure about a company.

Check if the HVAC Company you’re hiring is legitimate. Check out their website for a physical address and phone number.

Check to see if the contractor you plan to hire has had any complaints filed against them. It is common for businesses such as Heating and Air companies to have complaints filed against them. But what is important is how these complaints were resolved or if they were resolved at all. Unresolved issues are a cause for concern.

Find out the type of equipment used and the kind of tests that the company performs on a HVAC system. Specifically look for tests on carbon monoxide levels that could be a cause of danger to you and your family.

When summer comes, the weather gets hotter and the cost of cooling our homes gets more expensive. The easiest and most convenient way to cool your home is to use your air conditioning system, but the increase in your power bill could also cause your temper to rise.

There are other ways of keeping your home cool this summer without necessarily incurring a huge power bill and they are environmentally friendly to boot.

Here are four alternative tips for keeping your home cool this summer:

Use ceiling fans and fans

To keep your home cool during summer, the most basic thing to do is to lessen the source of heat and get rid of the heat accumulated inside the home. Using ceiling fans and portable fans will keep the air inside the home circulating freely. You can have a fan switched on for 12 hours a day, keeping down indoor temperature by around 6 to 7 degrees and still you won’t spend more than $10 per month on extra power costs.

Cover your windows with drapes, blinds or shades

The best way to keep the heat out and lessen the source of heat is to deflect the heat of the sun away from the house. You can effectively do this by installing white drapes, blinds or shades. Closing the drapes, blinds or shades on windows that face the sun is also a way to keep the heat out and to keep your home cool this summer.

Reduce internal heat

Other sources of heat inside the house are household appliances such as televisions, stoves and even incandescent lights. Refrain from cooking during the hottest time of the day and when you cook use the range fan to blow away the heat from inside the house. Turn off incandescent lights during the day or if you absolutely need the light, replace them with compact fluorescent lights that generate less heat and consume less energy while giving out the same illumination as incandescent bulbs.

Trees and plants

Trees planted around a home not only provide shade but also help in making the home cooler inside. Putting plants indoors will give the room an ambiance of freshness and coolness.

There are ways other than massive air conditioning to keep your home cool in summer, all you need is to be resourceful and imaginative.

If you’re thinking about replacing your hot water heater, here are a few reasons you should consider hiring a professional plumber for the job.

Local codes and ordinances may not permit self-installation. Regulations governing water heater installation vary by city. Professional contractors understand the rules and regulations in each city they service.

Installation requires materials and knowledge most homeowners don’t have on hand. Installation involves much more than simply attaching a water line. A professional contractor arrives with all the fittings, pipes, parts, tools, venting materials and valves required to install the work correctly the first time. Most also include removal and disposal of your respective old water heater.

You may not select the right hot water heater for your needs and specifications. It’s not as simple as replacing a 30-gallon hot water heater with another 30-gallon model. There are thousands of sizes and options available today. Fuel source, energy efficiency, fast recovery, venting and anticipated demand must all be considered to be able to determine the correct model.

A professional contractor may be able to repair your hot water heater rather than change it out. If your hot water heater’s issue is diagnosed as a defective heating unit or faulty valve, it could be fixed. A contractor’s experience is the distinction between a minor repair and unnecessary investment in a new water heater.

Contractors provide safety and security you can live with. Professional contractors are licensed and bonded to make sure your safety. Most provide warranties covering each installation. The local building authorities inspect all work, as required by code to protect your family’s health and safety.

Sewer lines are meant to last for a life time, unfortunately, some of the time they don’t. When you hear unusual gurgles coming from the toilet or notice a foul smell coming from sinkholes in the backyard or experience flooding in the bathroom after your shower, then in all probability, something is wrong with your sewer. The first thing that comes to mind for most people is “how much would a sewer line repair cost?”

Common causes of sewer damage
Your sewer line can be damaged for several reasons. Age is one common cause of sewer line damage. Just like humans, older pipes are more likely to break than newer ones, especially if your pipes are still the type made of clay. Tree root incursion can also clog the pipes and eventually cause them damage. And the most common cause though would be pipe obstruction from foreign objects that get flushed in the system, accumulation of grease, soap residue, hair and other stuff that gets sluiced down the drain daily. Corrosion is also another reason why pipes rot away.

Cost to repair or replace a damaged sewer line
Having a sewer line repaired is fairly easy. All you need to do is call a reputable plumbing company to do it for you. The cost will depend on the extent of the damage. Sometimes you may even need pipe replacement which will be a bit more expensive.

A pipe camera inspection to find out what’s wrong and what sewer line repair is required could easily cost you from $250 to $500. Sewer line repair, depending on the kind of damage, the location of the pipe or the accessibility could cost from $50 per foot to almost double the price or more. If a section of the pipe is beyond repair then it needs pipe replacement, maybe not only of the damaged section but of the entire sewer line that could easily cost you from $3,000 to around $12,000, quite a drain in your resources.

The cost of a sewer line repair or worst a sewer line replacement could break the bank. To avoid this kind of problems, it would be better to have a regular sewer line inspection and maintenance from your friendly plumber.

Spring is nearly here and we’re already seeing warmer temperatures. Before long, many of you will feel the need to turn on your air conditioning units. So here are a few quick tips on how you can keep your home cooler this Spring and Summer.

Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible during the summer time. The less difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill is going to be.

Don’t set your thermostat at a colder temperature setting than usual when you turn on your air conditioner.

Consider fans to spread the cooled air more effectively through your home without greatly increasing your power use.

Don’t place lamps or Television sets near your a / c thermostat.

Plant trees or shrubs to shade air-conditioning units but not to block the flow of air. A unit operating in the shade uses as much as 10% less electricity compared to the same one operating in the sun.

If you need immediate advice about your air conditioning, e-mail us via our website or call (864) 517-1251.

You get your supply of hot water from water heaters that are operated or run either by gas, oil or electricity. When you open the faucet, hot water flows from the top of the tank and is replaced by cold water that streams into the bottom of the water heater tank. The heat regulating device of your water tank is a thermostat that automatically activates the tank’s heating element when the there is a drop in the water’s temperature.

To ensure that your water heater is in good working condition, you should have it inspected regularly and check for some “unusual” signs that may need a more professional inspection. Here are the signs to watch out for:

When your water heater’s temperature-pressure relief valve releases boiling water or steam

Your water heater’s temperature-pressure safety valve, which can be found close to the tank’s top, prevents extreme pressure and temperatures. There is a release pipe attached to the safety valve that goes down the tank’s side and reaches barely higher than the floor. Discharged water flows down this pipe to guard against accidental burning from boiling water. When your water heater’s temperature-pressure relief valve releases boiling water or steam turn off your water heater and look for a plumber fast. This could mean that there is a problem with your water heater or that the safety valve is defective.

When you hear unusual sounds from the tank such as sizzling or whistling or a crackling and rumbling noise

These strange noises can only mean one thing; sediments have accumulated in the bed of the tank of your water heater. Sediment lowers the efficiency of your water heater and could also be the source of more problems.

When water drips from the safety valve or does not run through it

When you check the relief valve by raising or pushing down the valve’s handle and no water runs through it and flow to the discharge pipe or water keeps on dripping from the relief valve once the handle of the valve is released, you will need to have your water heater inspected. It may need a valve replacement.

When you notice a leak on the pipes

When you notice a leak in the pipes – hot water pipes and cold water pipes, or on the metal housing of the water heater, have your unit immediately inspected by a plumber and have the leaks repaired or even have the pipe or tank replaced if needed.

Circuit breakers are electrical safety devices meant to protect your house, your household equipment and you. They are supposed to make sure that you do not overload your electrical circuit. When a circuit breaker trips there is generally no reason to be alarmed. It trips to stop the surge of electricity that is more than what the circuit can allow. When circuit breaker trips it is just doing its job of protecting the circuit from overloading and overheating that could cause damage and even fire.

If after resetting the circuit breaker and flipping on the switch, it trips again you should to check the reason why it keeps tripping. It could be any one of the following causes:

Circuit overload
The typical reason why a circuit breaker would trip is because of a circuit overload that occurs when there is electrical energy flowing through a circuit that is more than it can handle. This can be remedied by reducing the electrical load or redistributing the power to more than one circuit. If you have five household appliances connected to the circuit that trips repeatedly, turning off one or two of these appliances or moving them to a circuit that is less loaded will lessen the load on the troubled circuit.

Loose connections may also cause a circuit overload. Turn off the power and look for loose wires by inspecting outlets as well as the hot wire that connects the circuit breaker to the electrical service panel. Tighten the loose connection to remedy the problem.

Short circuit
If circuit overload is not the reason why your circuit breaker keeps tripping, it could be one other reason that is more serious and dangerous, a short circuit. A short circuit happens when a live wire touches another live or neutral wire. A broken wire can also cause a short circuit. It is more difficult to identify since it could be any point in your home’s wiring connected to the circuit or could be caused by an appliance plugged into an outlet.

Looking for the short circuit is a tedious process. All the wiring, plugs and outlets connected to the circuit have to be inspected to check for any sign of burning, cracked or broken insulation with wires touching each other. If you need assistance, contact a licensed electrician.

Ground Fault
If the reason for the repeated tripping of your circuit breaker is not circuit overload or a short circuit then it could be ground fault. This condition is caused by a hot wire touching the ground wire or a metal outlet box. To remedy a ground fault, make sure that the hot wire does not touch the ground wire or metal outlet box.
